Right of Way TO THE RESCUE! By Beth Smith, SR/WA Joint Luncheon with SCCAI Notice Did you know? IRWA Course Schedule Navigating Through Stormy Seas, Leadership through Adversity By Yasmin L. Stump, Esq. Industry Buzz Board & Committees About RWIEF
I was introduced to IRWA, when a Law firm I worked with invited me to a Chapter 57 meeting. I immediately recognized this was a fun chapter and asked to come back. I volunteered to become the environmental chair and the next thing I knew I was asked to be Secretary. I am excited to be the incoming President of Chapter 57, the fun chapter.
These are interesting times, navigating COVID restrictions, fear, and new normal. I look forward to the opportunity and challenges of bringing us back together in person for meetings and more. I am excited to work with our new chapter leaders including Hector Casillas, President-Elect, Robbie Hechanova, Treasurer, and Peggy Barnes, Secretary and trusted advisor. I also look forward to working with our many past leaders and chapter members. My main goal will be to coordinate a return to normal, where everyone feels comfortable. I want to create an environment at these meetings that cultivates fun. Also, we will focus on membership and education. I will work with Griffin Wayne and Kelley Kelley… Upcoming events include the Region 1 Fall Forum, Tri-Chapter, and Spring Forum. The Fall Forum is a meeting of new Presidents and Vice Presidents from each of Region 1’s 13 chapters, as well as a couple of folks from HQ. It is scheduled for October 15th. The Tri-Chapter is the annual holiday meeting with Chapters 1, 67, and 57 scheduled for December 9th and always a lot of fun. The Spring Forum has not been planned and Chapter 57 is considering hosting it. I hope y’all join us and see what the “new normal” will look like. Matthew Nusenow Chapter 57 President 2021/2022
President's Message Happy New Year everyone and welcome to a new decade! 2020 kicked off with a bang and it’s hard to believe January is already behind us. If you are someone who makes a resolution each year, I hope you’ve stuck to it. We wrapped up 2019 with the annual Tri-Chapter at the Mission Inn. I want to thank each and every one of you for making it a fantastic event. It was one of the most well attended to date and hopefully you were one of the lucky winners of our raffle prizes. Although there is much to do in the Southern California region prior to the Olympics, Holly Rockwell’s presentation personally made me very excited for the projects and transportation improvements that are forthcoming. Thank you again to all our sponsors for helping make this event a success. The days are starting to get longer but my term as President is getting shorter. In just a few months, we will have new leaders to move our Chapter forward. An email went out in January and we will be requesting nominations at our February 5th luncheon. As I’ve done all year, I encourage you to get involved. If you are interested in joining our great group of professionals, please make it known. You can contact me or Christie Santolucito, our Nominations Chair, for more information. Chapter 57 will be hosting Region 1’s Fall Forum in October. On the Friday prior to that event, we will be holding our Fall Education Seminar. We are in the preliminary planning phases, so if you have a specific education request, please let the Board know. Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally. It comes from what you do consistently. Make 2020 great by consistently being the best YOU you can be! Welcome the new challenges as well as the new opportunities. Cheers! Kim Bibolet, SR/WA, R/W-NAC Chapter 57 President, 2019/20
For those of you who do not know me, I am Kim Bibolet, your new Chapter 57 President. I started my right of way career at Epic Land Solutions 11 years ago. I still remember being asked if I knew what an easement was during my interview (and my answer was no). I thought for sure I would be shown the door never to return once “right of way” was explained to me. Luckily, the Overcamps saw something in me and I was given a chance. was introduced to the IRWA a couple years later. In fact, I got engaged to be married the night before my very first lunch. I began taking classes and working my way along the path to reach my SR/WA. I drove to Arizona shortly after the birth of my 1st daughter, she was 8 weeks old, to take the SR/WA 3-day cram course. That was the only course offered on the West Coast that year and three of us from Chapter 57 made the trip. Somehow, although sleep deprived, I passed. When I was sworn in as Secretary, my 2nd daughter (4 weeks old) attended the installation with me. As you can see, major milestones have been celebrated with my family and the friends I have made in the industry over the years. Whether we are colleagues or competitors, we support one another and the strive for the common goal of improving people’s quality of life through infrastructure development. This is why I chose to join the Executive Board. I am excited for the year ahead and I look forward to leading the board and the chapter through a successful year. Shortly after the installation lunch in June, the International Education Conference was held in Portland, Oregon. It was the 2nd highest attended conference to date. Chapter 57 had many members in attendance as did the rest of the Southern California chapters. There were so many great sessions, it was hard to decide which ones to attend. Many thanks to our members who routinely attend our luncheons. We’ve been averaging 50-60 members at the luncheons and I hope we can continue to introduce the IRWA to new people and grow that attendance even further. Chapter 57’s very own Mark Easter will be presenting at the upcoming luncheon on September 4th. To add to the excitement, we changed venues and our luncheons will now be held at the Canyon Crest Country Club in Riverside. I look forward to seeing you. Finally, Chapter 57 will be hosting the Tri-Chapter Lunch this year at the Mission Inn. If you would like to dedicate your time to help with this event, the Events Committee would welcome your participation. We are also looking for sponsors – this is a great time for your business to advertise! Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your President. Cheers! Kim Bibolet, SR/WA, R/W-NAC Chapter 57 President
